December 9, 2016 Leave a Comment Brad Smith

Great designers are hard to find. Ones who get it… who understand conversion principles and business objectives and can translate that into something beautiful that also works.

Great designers are also vastly underpaid. Mistreated. And subjected to the most inane direction from clients and bosses imaginable.

It takes 0.05 seconds for someone to have a first impression of your site. Of whether they’re going to listen to what you say, eventually trust you, and perhaps, one day, purchase.

And ALL of that comes down to design.

Yet, designers are forced by the people cutting the checks to work with garbage. Which inevitably leads to, garbage.

Here’s why, kicking off with a bang.

On Oct 22nd we were invited to give a keynote speech at the Mashable Social Media Day 2016 in Milan. While the speech was in Italian, it definitely has a worldwide view and is intended for a global audience. We received lots of requests for an English transcript, so here it is. Hope you enjoy it.

First of all: who am I and why should you read this and believe a single word of what I’m going to tell you? Well, I’m just a regular guy that moved from Italy to San Francisco five years ago. I co-founded 6 companies (both tech and non-tech), the last of which is AdEspresso.

What is AdEspresso? Technically it’s a SaaS Solution for Facebook Advertising Optimization, but the easy way to describe it is this: it’s a company created to help small and medium businesses get more out of their advertising dollars on Facebook, faster. If you are spending between $3,000 and $100,000 per month in Facebook Ads, you should probably check out what we do.

Grow Your Facebook Group With Data-Driven Experiments

November 4, 2016 Leave a Comment Animalz

One of the most powerful metaphors for creating social engagement on the web comes from Aesop’s fable about stone soup.

In the fable, two hungry travelers with an empty pot figure out a way to turn nothing into something. They start by throwing a rock in the pot. “Hey,” they tell a townsperson, “We are making stone soup. Do you have any ingredients to lend?” The first townsperson gives them carrots. Another townsperson wanders by and notices the scene. “Hey,” the travelers say, “We’re making stone soup, but so far we only have carrots. Do you have any ingredients to lend us?” And the second townsperson gives them garlic.

This goes on and on, and as more and more townspeople contribute ingredients to the soup, what was once just a rock in a bowl becomes a delicious feast for the whole town to enjoy.
